" at the bottom of the image on the back of the invitation raises some eyebrows, but last night in the routine district convention article during the service meeting, i caught that one of the paragraphs mentioned that we would be encouraged to keep a copy of the tract in hand for a discussion during sunday's last talk.
my guess is, there is going to be some new revelation about what the "?
" represents, or some other fangled idea.
Here's what drives me crazy. These apocalyptic flyers we have to hand out every year always make it seem like some new, incredible revelation is going to be unleashed on the audience, just melting everyone's faces. So you drop money for a hotel, drive 4,000 light years away to some god-forsaken city for 3-4 days all wondering what could this "LIFE-SAVING INCREDIBLE ANNOUNCEMENT/PROCLAMATION/INFORMATION" be?
But it's all just a big tease. You end up sitting through 20 hours of corny "protect your kids from the internet" speeches and other pre-canned talks that are exactly like the articles in the Watchtower. Then you watch a goofy over-the-top play which depicts ancient Corinthian Christians supposidly doing everything that the modern day JWs do. Then you drive all the way home, $500 poorer and a whole weekend wasted.
plus which book was the worse?.
i'd say daniel book.
boring as all shit and crap pictures.
saltyoldlady - I agree, the Revelation book is embarrassing. If a non-JW ever flipped through that Anti-American, apocalyptic, psychotic book, they might think that Fred Phelps wrote it.
i thought i shared this post made on http://de-conversion.com.. i'm in #6. indifferent.. .
a person de-converts.... 1) loss.
de-convert feels extremely sad, a sense of loss and remorse, struggling to cope with a worldview without a personal deity.
I think we can all relate to the anger and the thirst for knowledge after we leave the JW's.
Damn skippy, Nomad! Literature is one of the things that opened me up. Not any kind of anti-cult self help book or Crisis of Conscience (although those are all important books). It was literature - Doestovesky, Shakespeare, Celine, Hemingway, Bukowski, Henry Miller, D. H. Lawrence, Darwin, Nietzsche, etc.
I guess I figured that since I got screwed out of a real education, I might as well educate myself as best as I could. Best decision I ever made. Suddenly all kinds of different perspectives were open to me. I saw people as individuals, each with their own beliefs, reasons and circumstances. You learn to respect other people's feelings. You don't always have to agree with their ideas or feelings, but you can at least understand your fellow human instead of simply writing him off as a "dead duck" when he tells you that he's not interested in the Watchtower & Awake on a Saturday morning.
officaly they say that they don't want the r&f to have low self esteem, they say that low self esteem is from the devil.. .
but they create a culture that cannot help but give their r&f crippling self esteem, the constant empasis is on looking at the flaws in oneself.
"pummeling" yourself because of your sins, all the publications tell us over and over again that we are "dust" and deserve nothing.. .
Great question, highdose. There is a lot of authoritarian and clique-ish behavior in halls, coupled with books like Keep Yourself In God's Love which essentially make it seem as though if you cough, God will vaporize you.
It's odd because they will openly "love-bomb" you. They will walk around hugging and kissing you, calling you "dear brother" or "dear sister" but if you so much as put one toe out of line, well, to quote Henry Hill from Goodfellas:
"If you're part of a crew (or in this case a JW congregation), nobody ever tells you that they're going to kill you. It doesn't happen that way. There weren't any arguments or curses like in the movies. So your murderers come with smiles. They come as your friends, the people who have cared for you all of your life, and they always seem to come at a time when you're at your weakest and most in need of their help."
So the end result is that the person either suffers from low self-esteem, or if they have a more internal locus of control, they my be determined to live their life in their own way. They may become increasingly insular and reclusive, as this is one of the only ways to protect your privacy if you are a JW.

Interesting thread, Nomad. Although I'm sure that this isn't the only psychological model that exists for an individual undergoing "de-programming" this is a pretty good one.
Personally, if I applied the above model to myself, I would have to say that I am probably by now in the ballpark of 4) Anger.
But as Zack de la Rocha said:
"Anger is a gift."

Sweeney - Keep Yourself In God's Love seemed to be designed to make you feel like a horrible sinner. I would say that the overall message of that awful book was that if you disagree or are not 1,000% happy with the WTBS, if you EVER have an impure thought or don't spend every moment of your existence with your nose in one of the WTBS publications, GOD HATES YOU AND WILL KILL YOU AND CAST YOU OFF FOREVER. I found the book to be over-the-top judgmental even by WTBS standards. Ironically the title of the book (and cover picture) makes it seem like it's going to be all about how loving God is. Sad.
Pig - Great news! To quote the chairman at assemblies as he announces every talk.... "Brother Pig, all 9,434 in attendance eagarly await with keen anticipation the cartoon you will be providing!" *THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE*

Keep Yourself In God's Love was by far the most blatently judgmental guilt-tripping, elder-praising waste of tree pulp I've ever read. How many squirrels had to die so that this tripe could be published???
BTW, Pig................When can we expect another awesome KH cartoon???? Don't leave me hanging!

Sweeney - hahaha sorry, I is nots a guud typer. i ment to hit enter there.
